High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a form of cardio which is beneficial to burning fat in a short and intense workout. It is an exercise strategy that is intended to improve performance with short training sessions.

A HIIT session consists of a warm up period, followed by six to ten repetitions of high intensity exercise, separated by low intensity exercise, and ending with a cool down period. The high intensity exercise should be done at near maximum intensity. The low exercise should be about 50% intensity. The number of repetitions and length of each depends on the exercise. The goal is to do at least six cycles, and to have the entire HIIT session last at least fifteen minutes and not more than twenty.

Seconds is an interval training timer specifically developed to help you create and get the most out of your HIIT workouts. Ok, spent ages debating whether to get Seconds or ITGO. This is half the price, this has a much clearer interface, and definitely much easier to use. And unlike ITGO you don't have to pay extra to get the premium (!!) function to vary the high/low interval ratios that allow you to tailor them to your needs. No faffing about with 21:41 (or whatever it is that gives you whatever high/low times you want in ITGO!), just enter the seconds/minutes as you want them. So apart from the funky graphic on ITGO (does anyone actually want to look at graphics on the iPhone when running??) Seconds wins hands down. This is just what I was looking for! Very simple to use. Play your iPod while using the preset workouts or create a custom workout and add your own music to match the pace of your interval. I like the unfussy clear screen set up. Would definitely recommend. - CA Reviewer

• Temporary fix for iPod no longer working in background. By selecting the same playlist for consecutive intervals the songs will no longer skip. (Unfortunately this is a device limitation. If you want the beeps while the phone is locked, the iPod won't work)
